This title is from her “October” collection. October was created to inspire nostalgic feelings. Being Nigerian is reminiscent of several transient & conflicting realities.
A Slum.
That’s all most people see, but Makoko is a uniquely gifted commune.
Sprawled beneath the 3rd mainland bridge located on the coast of mainland Lagos (Nigeria), it was founded as a fishing village in the late 19th century. It is largely harboured by the Egun people who migrated from Badagry and the Republic of Benin and whose main occupation is fishing.
As its population swelled, it expanded to form settlements on stilts along the lagoon.
Locally made, handcrafted canoes slither through labyrinths of waterways, affording the user an active view of the bustling community-women smoking fish or selling food; children rowing their own boats or playing on the verandas of the wooden home.
